Making homemade applesauce gives you complete control over the flavor, ingredients, and texture while using up fresh or bruised fruit. Homemade applesauce is comforting and the perfect little treat. So much of homemade applesauce depends on the apples you use and your personal preference for texture and sweetness. I prefer a softer, sweet, mushy applesauce so I use MacIntosh apples but often use what is in the fruit bowl that needs to be used up. I add some sugar and cinnamon to my family's flavor preference. By adding a bit of water, cooking it longer, and using a masher I get the consistency and texture I like.
Ingredients
- 6 apples (washed, peeled, cored, and chopped)
- 1/4 to 1/3 cup sugar (add to taste based on how sweet you like it and what type of apples you use. I prefer a soft apple such as a MacIntosh)
- 1/2 to 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon (add to taste for warm spice)
- 1/4 cup water (just a splash, only if needed to keep the apples from sticking)
Directions
- Step 1 Wash, peel, core, and chop your apples into small chunks.
- Step 2 Place the apples into a saucepan over medium heat.
- Step 3 Watch the pan as it heats. If the fruit looks dry or starts to stick to the bottom, add a small splash of water.
- Step 4 Let the apples cook for 15 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally and checking for moisture until they fall apart easily. (Add water if needed but only to make sure apples do not stick. Apples will naturally release their juices.)
- Step 5 Stir in sugar and cinnamon little by little, tasting as you go until it is just right for you.
- Step 6 Mash the cooked apples with a fork or potato masher to your preferred texture.
- Step 7 Serve warm, room temperature, or cool. Enjoy!
